The Zucchinis Are Coming, The Zucchinis Are Coming!

Last Saturday. We did go to Tasha’s for a lovely meal with Indira who is in my poetry group and Karen. It was a bit difficult for me, as I’m having trouble with my left leg from an accident.  But it’s all on one level, so I can manage.

We’re neither of feeling social after a very social last weekend. We both have a lot to do inside and out – I HOPE to get outside. Especially now that it has finally cooled down. It was wonderful to sleep last night with windows open and just a light blanket.  Air conditioning for me is essential to live but it’s much nicer when we have natural air.

We try to train cats; cats succeed far better at training us. Shaman has rained Woody into playing with him as soon as he drinks his coffee. When Shaman wants a different toy, he makes that clear. He has me trained when I go to my computer right after coffee in the morning, I must pet him and kiss him and fuss him up before I am allowed to answer my email.  Just a few examples of how cats have successfully trained us. Willow insists that when I get into bed at night, before I turn off the light. She has taught me exactly how she wants to be petted and she chooses how long it will go on. She also demands sometimes that I sleep a certain way so she is comfortable on me and in the crook of my knees if I sleep on my side.

Schwartzie tells time and insists on being fed at certain times – 6 am, 12 noon and 5 pm. He rounds up the others if they don’t come for supper at once.

Catherine Raven’s Fox and I was riveting. It’s the best memoir I’ve read in some time She has an accurate and compelling eye and ear and keen observational skills. In addition, she writes well.  It’s won various prizes and I recommend it highly.

The hot weather killed all my beautiful pansies on the front porch. I’ll have to buy some annuals to relace them. I tried marigolds there, but the rabbits came up on the porch and ate them all. They haven’t shown interest in the cosmos or zinnias I planted in my pollinator gardens. They seem to love marigolds (in spite of various garden ‘expert’ posts I’ve read that recommend them for rabbit repellence). They ate the ones in Woody’s garden and in another long pot.

Now it’s cool again and pleasant but while it was too hot to get outside, the zucchini took off and some of them got huge in three days. I cooked them yesterday; I’ll cook them a different way tonight. I still have the alst of the broccoli to eat this week also. We’re still getting decent lettuce. But the arugula is gone and the red mustard and radishes. When I can get outside, I’ll probably put some winter squash in. With out long falls, they should produce. Delicatas are early, so maybe them.

Woody installed Roku last week and it sure makes it easier to watch Netflix. In football season, we’ll go on Prime and actually watch the games. With Comcast/Prime, it usually took up 20 minutes to get into a game and half the time we just gave up.
