The Week That Was
This week was very busy, as usual I guess. Nina and I have just about gotten my new poetry book together. I’m going bat-shit now trying to come up with a good enough title. I keep making lists and Nina and Woody keep vetoing them or else I decide myself a title is too weak or is misleading.
Monday of course, we won’t be working this week as it’s Yom Kippur. I’ve already put in time and energy thinking about my faults, my failures, how I might have hurt someone else intentionally or unintentionally. Monday I’ll devote hours to thinking about my dead ones. Making some resolutions about the new year.
This week, I did a lot of fall planting. Six kinds of lettuce, escarole, endive, two kinds of Chinese cabbage, radishes, Savoy cabbage. I replanted Cilantro that I had put in two weeks ago.. All that planting pretty much died. We received almost no rain and it got hot. That’s probably what happened to the tiny seedlings that came up and promptly died. I have to replant arugula sometime this week.
My chive blossom vinegar is steeping. Another week, and then I’ll filter it and store in bottles. It’s my favorite vinegar. I used some of last years in the dressing for a chicken salad. Tonight, the last zucchini mélange of the year. I make it every year during the summer and it’s different every time and every time Woody says it’s the best I’ve ever served him. It always has zukes, often patty pans, eggplant when the garden gives us any. Peppers, especially frying peppers, too, when we have them. Always onions, garlic and some form of tomatoes or tomato
sauce. Oregano, basil, parsley. A bit of wine if needed. Cumin.
The nights have returned to chilly after warm afternoons. Chilly is good sleeping weather, even better after Woody brought down a light feather quilt instead of my summer quilt. I go to sleep without it but around 2 or 3 AM I wake up cold and pull it over me.
I worry that Trump will call out his thugs when he loses the midterms and overthrow the election – something he has no scruples about. Another January 6. What if anything does he have scruples about, anyhow[MP1] ? A mad man in charge of health. A right-wing Christian nationalist Secretary of ‘War’ who wants an all-white Christian army with permanent hard-ons to march into battle ready to rape. A military of white soldiers loyal to him who will not hesitate to fire on protesters, especially Black, Hispanic, and women.
He wants to strip rights from anyone who disagrees with him or who simply reports on all the damage he is doing and has done to our government, our allies who no longer trust us, destroying national parks and protection for wildlife, deporting working people who are fixtures in their communities and necessary for work to go on in construction, restaurants, home care, etc.
