Technology Has Made Life So Much Better, Right?

The day began to go sour on Tuesday morning, when I couldn’t get into my computer.  It was locked against me. I could do nothing.  I tried and then called My Computer Works to which I subscribe.  The techie who answered worked for hours on the problem.  He finally got into the computer by afternoon.  I worked for a while but discovered a lot of problems.  My desktop was unrecognizable.  I couldn’access programs I needed.  He had to reboot the computer and that made a mess.

The next day I called again. The woman was knowledgeable and fixed a lot of what kept me from working.  I then worked well for a while, but as time went on, I found more problems caused by the rebooting so that I could once again use the computer.

I called again on Friday. He found a lot of corrupted elements and worked most of the day trying to fix them. He found that some of my most important files had been, lost or corrupted.  I buy the program Carbonite and last evening during my interrupted supper decided to download everything on Carbonite to get what I needed back in good usable condition. I have had the backup running since yesterday and all night and all day today.  It should be all done by some time tomorrow, maybe by noon. Then I’m supposed to call them again. They aren’t making any profit on me.  This will be the 4th person my problems have tied up for hours and hours.

Last night around 5:15 it began to rain.  We are enjoying a true rainy day, the first in weeks and this should help the cucumbers develop.  They’re the only disappointment so far, as we’ve only had two.  I cooked a delicious patty pan dish with cheddar cheese and whole wheat panko crumbs, eggs and herbs.  It lasted two nights, which was good since I was on the phone with my technical assistant right after I began to cook and Woody had to take over.

The week also began with our air conditioning in my office and the livingroom both dead. The air was heavy and exhausted me.  Hot, very humid, dew point in the tropical range. I called the company that had installed with Fujitsu mini-split units that both heat and cool and with whom we had a hardly cheap service contract. They seemed uninterested, said they were very busy [not surprising during a heat wave] and had no idea when they might come. They said I was in the queue. Woody immediately called Snows who deliver our propane and service the generator.  They came Thursday morning and fixed them.  They have worked ever since.

Technology has made our lives so much better, hasn’t it?

Of course, when the air conditioner came back on, Shaman was the first to discover it.  For the better part of a week the cats had all turned into piles of fur on the floor, stretched out as flat as they could manage.  Shaman, at least, is all for technology; when it works.
