Slowly, Slowly Spring
SLOWLY, SLOWLY SPRING
It was a cool wet spring until just this week. We hadn’t had to water, but a lot of seeds had trouble germinating in chilly earth. Now it’s finally a bit warmer, hovering around 50-- a bit below, up to 8 or 9 degrees above. That’s far pleasanter for outdoor work, unless the wind is too fierce. Then I work only in the greenhouse, where there’s plenty ot work to do. I’ve finally thinned everybody. I have a sore neck so that is slowing me down.
There are hundreds of daffodils in bloom, around the house and all the way down to the road. It makes me smile when I look at them. Dark blue hyacinths, dark blue scilla siberica and one lone forsythia bush all in bloom. Spring is late, but it’s here.
Tonight we’ll get take-out at 3 Fools in Orleans and bring it to where my oldest friends Jeff and Eleanor are staying for a few daiys. They often come around now to stay with Helene Kennedy, the lawyer and Baroness who has a house on the water on Commercial street. She is having a knee replacement in London where she lives, but they’re coming anyhow and staying in her house. They’ll provide wine and dessert and we’re bringing the main course for each person. We’re both eager to discuss the political situation with them.
I’m on a totally new regime for my glaucoma. It’s more complicated and I’m not sure yet how it will work for me. At least, my new doctor is interested and was the one who finally got rid of the intense itching and pain by an accurate diagnosis. My previous eye doctor wasn’t interested in my suffering, only in my glaucoma.
I think the first thing from the garden we’ll start to harvest in ten days or so is the looseleaf Chinese cabbage. I disdovered that while I thought I had transplanted all the hardy veggies, the parsley was hiding and has to be thinned and then when it recovers, to get into the herb garden.
The various summer bulbs and the few perennials I ordered are here or on the way. Time to get them into the flower gardens including the pollinator garden.
My agent is querying independent presses to see if they’ll look at my book. I have been writing poems. I took a month off poetry to finish the book revisions, and now it’s like a hose that was shut off with the water on – a strong outpouring. Three this week. I am still revising them.
