Freezing in the Heat
Except for Thursday, this week was hot. At times, very hot. We’re not accustomed to really hot weather in early June so it hit both of us hard. Woody worked long hours in debilitating heat. I could only do it for an hour and a half. Then I wilted. But we froze seven pounds of broccoli, as well eating it three times. We are dealing with the last of the spinach. Fourteen pounds was enough. Don’t want more frozen.
Iran clearly won that stupid war. The are getting everything they wanted and more—a whole lot of $$$$$$$. They outlasted what Trump could endure politically. He caved at what he should have expected.
On Friday I froze small packets of cilantro and dill to use in the winter months.
We lost all the cucumbers I started in early spring to the drought. We could not get them enough water. But the tomatoes in both our gardens look terrific. My arapaho peppers are outstanding. Woody’s bell and frying peppers got off to a slower start but are catching up. So far, the Brussels sprouts have survived the rabbits. I haven’t seen the fox that was taking up residence as Thomas, the next store neighbor, is building a new house between his house and ours. I suspect that drove the fox away and the rabbits are coming back in larger numbers. Woody was watering the lettuce the other day and a rabbit jumped out as if to say, “That was rude!”
I have been having serious eye trouble . I see the glaucoma surgeon this week. Frankly, I’m terrified. I had to call off my poetry group on Wednesday as that’s when I have the appointment @ 2:30 pm. The last appointment on this issue with my regular glaucoma doctor lasted three hours and left me shaking and exhausted, very sore and unable to see much at all. I’m hoping the group can reschedule on another evening.
Nina is working out very well so far. I have my fingers crossed. I genuinely like her and thus am eager that it does. We’ve gone through a lot of what had piled up during the 13 weeks I was without an assistant. With my current eye problems, I need help more than ever.
My BFF Gigi stopped by on Thursday and we had a great conversation. Tonight, I’ll make a Greek dish, arni me lahanika fresca – Lamb with fresh vegetables I think I’ll use spinach, the last of the rows. Woody’ll plant something else there. Probably winter squash. I planted in pots this week, ferns, marigolds of two types, little lavenders. The nasturtiums I thought dead as they were so slow to germinate how now pushed up in satisfactory numbers. I have three plants I purchased that I still need to plant – once I decide where to put them
We have a few peonies in bloom and some roses. Fragrant, all of them. A pale blush David Austen double rose and a full white peony. Paul’ s Himalayan musk that has grown over thirty feet on, over, around the gazebo is in full bloom. Bluebells all over the place. So many ticks! Woody comes inside with several ticks I dig out every single day. One day this week, he had five of them, as dangerous as they are plentiful. I no longer envy people who can still walk the wood trails; at least this time of year. I’m very good at getting them out of him. Usually fast unless they’re really dug in to his flesh.
