Cabin fever

This week I hit a wall.  I’ve scarcely been out of the house since my operation and I am bored doing the repetitive exercises that use up too much of my time every day.  I did write a midrash on Rebeccah one morning and I’ve produced 2 more essays for the Outspoken Author Book, but I have genuine cabin fever. I’m tired of reading and watching the Olympics for fun.  I’m not prone to cabin fever, but this winter has just been too much.  I can’t take a chance walking on ice because if I fall, it’s back into the hospital and another operation. It turned a bit mild this week, rain instead of snow, so yesterday Woody drove me [I am not cleared to drive yet] to the Senior Center.  It has a long hall and also a big meeting room I could circle. I walked for twenty-minutes or so.  That may not sound like much of an accomplishment, but for me, it was.We wanted to go out to eat with two friends but on Valentine’s Day we were afraid restaurants would be crowded and besides, they always raise the prices.  So Dale and Stephen picked us up and we went to Wellfleet Pizza.  They make great thin crust pizzas, the way I like them, and they play 60s music early and then switch to good jazz. It has an old road house atmosphere.  We brought out own wine – the owner forgot to renew his license and it will be a while before they can sell wine and beer. It’s lucky I got out last night since guess what, it’s snowing.  We’re scheduled to receive the brunt of this storm.  Some weather people predict 10 inches; some say a foot.  Not what I was hoping for, since I’ll be stuck here. I wanted to go the Torah study with Rabbi Ullman who always make it intellectually challenging, but he will be in Dennis –if he gets here at all – and it’s unlikely we’ll escape the driveway for a day or so.  I just hope we don’t lose power. All my seeds have arrived so tomorrow I’ll divide up the ones I start inside into weekly packets.  I’ll start with parsley – curly and Italian flat – and sweet and hot peppers, since they take so long to grow enough to plant. We cleaned up the storeroom and I’m waiting to see if the old heating pads still work—the peppers will need bottom heat, the parsleys, don’t.My oldest cat, Efi, is peeing all over the place.  We don’t seem able to do anything about it – tried all the tricks the experts recommend.  She has kidney disease but so far she’s very happy, hanging with the other cats, eating okay, so she’s far from ready to die. But every day we have to clean up after her.I want to get back to poetry this week.  I’ll work on revising an essay from a few years ago, yes, but poetry above all is my priority.  Finally both contests are squared away and the winners informed and announced so I’m free to devote the bulk of my energy to my own work.  Tonight I’m cooking stuffed peppers accompanied by brown rice.  I froze 8 bags of peppers last summer.  When I freeze them, I trim off the parts that won’t be used and freeze them separately in little bags to add to sauces and stews. Also about to stew some rhubarb for compote – it wasn’t a great rhubarb year but we had a couple of pies so I froze several containers. And it’s still snowing….
